CORK old craft/new design
In no other country is so much cork harvested as in Portugal. There are 730,000 hectares of cork oak forest on the hills of Portugal.
The cork oaks are in the "Montados" and are not felled, but peeled.
Cork oaks are among the few trees that constantly form new bark. Before the bark can be harvested for the first time, an oak must grow for 25 years.
The bark of the cork oak can only be peeled every nine years. The tree takes no damage.
The harvest starts in May and runs until August. 100,000 jobs are directly or indirectly related to her.
A tiny piece of cork has millions of air cells and therefore excellent insulation properties. Cork, which is used for building insulation, is usually dark and coarse. It consists mainly of remnants of cork production and of inferior raw material, which is foamed under steam. There is also the bright, fine-grained cork.
